Henga Lodge is centrally placed and has rental vehicles which are essential for exploring the island. There is no camping anywhere and all land is privately owned even the foreshore so you need permission to visit some interesting locations. Our hosts, Bernadette and Mark were able to give us all the help we needed including loaning us some dive gear so we could get paua. You can self cater but we chose to eat at the Lodge and the meals were superb, particularly the salt and pepper squid. Be warned that everything is expensive because of both isolation and the freight costs. On the plus side the scenery is spectacular and we were made to feel welcome everywhere we went. A week is about the right length of time. When planning your trip make sure to enquire about a side trip to Pitt Island. We didn't make it for logistical reasons so that will have to wait until next time. I recommend Henga Lodge and special thanks to Mark and Bernadette for making our trip so enjoyable.

We visited the Chatham Islands as a tour group of 33 people. From the moment we stepped off the aircraft Henga Lodge staff took care of our luggage and though we were late arriving a supper was provided. The new owner of the lodge from late 2018, Bernadette looked after us really well, arranging tours every day. There are two types of accommodation, firstly the budget level modified container units and secondly rooms in the main lodge which I would recommend. Life on the Chathams is not always run to schedule. With regular low cloud at certain times of the year, aircraft can not land, hence there can be delays. All goods need to come to the island by an irregular shipping service or by air freight at a cost of $3.50 per kilo. If there is a shortage of some commodity eg butter it is not possible just to go to a supermarket. This means a lot of organising well in advance. Our daily tours took us to all parts of the island including places that not every tourist can access. The commentary was supplied by Bernadette and Kerry (the Tour Director). The weather on the island can be four seasons in one day, so pack accordingly. The food was excellent especially the blue cod. I cannot speak highly enough of the management and staff of Henga Lodge.

Henga Lodge was a great choice for our trip to the Chathams. It is only 10 minutes on the gravel road from the airport and down a long driveway over a farm and backs onto Henga DOC reserve. It is about 20 minute drive from the main town Waitangi - but we liked that considering there isn't much in town itself. Our room was fresh and super clean. We stayed in a 'kopi room' off to the side of the Lodge. It had its own bathroom and ranchslider that opened out onto the front lawn overlooking the nearby lake. The walking track through the bush started just around the corner and we took the opportunity to see lots of weka, fantails and limestone rocks during a morning stroll out to Long Beach. The food was great - especially the blue cod! The dining room overlooks farmland and was a nice place to chill out over a drink after a days adventuring. Staff are really friendly and the manager Bernadette was always helpful and suggesting places for us to go and visit in our rental car. They promote a 'clean green' look and have stainless steel drink bottles for purchase - which we happily brought to use each day. They also use eco friendly products in their bathrooms which was a really nice touch. We have travelled to the Chathams before but had been disappointed in the past staying elsewhere. But not this time Henga Lodge is definitely the place to stay! We highly recommend it!
We had an awesome stay, very comfortable, lovely views, the sightseeing is amazing, there are many places here that are like no other. Stay at Henga Lodge and meet Bernadette who went above and beyond for us,and made our holiday to the Chatham Islands the most memorable yet. Cosy atmosphere

It’s competitively priced and run by amazing people in a beautiful location. All you need to do is book a room, book a flight and the rest will be handled when you get there. Great hotel bar · Family-friendly · Quiet rooms
Couldn’t have seen as much, or got as much out of the break, without Bernadette’s help and advice. She and her team at Henga were awesome hosts and we were well looked after – definitely recommend Henga to anyone else wanting a holiday on the Chathams.
